PROGRESS!
The FDA has finally acknowledged ADHD drugs can cause addiction, even when used as prescribed.
The FDA just announced it will require this information to be added to its black box warning on all ADHD drugs. The “black box” is the agency’s most severe warning.
CCHR International has long demanded the FDA address just how addictive ADHD drugs are, continually citing the following facts:
Since 1971, The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has categorized ADHD drugs as having a “high potential for abuse” (Schedule II). In addition to ADHD drugs, Schedule II drugs today include such highly addictive drugs as morphine, oxycodone (Oxycontin), and fentanyl.
Since 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has been reporting on stimulant overdose deaths, including drugs commonly prescribed for ADHD.
According to the CDC, overdose deaths from stimulants (including ADHD drugs) have tripled in just five years going from 10,255 deaths in 2017 up to 32,478 in 2022.
And only now, in May 2023, has the FDA finally decided to warn the public that all ADHD drugs can lead to addiction, even when used as prescribed. The new warning also addresses the fact they can lead to overdose.
And these drugs are prescribed to millions of children.
In summary: The new FDA black box warning is a step in the right direction. But it is not enough. Since 1995, the DEA has also warned that ADHD drugs can cause “psychotic episodes, violent behavior, and bizarre mannerisms.”
That information also needs to be included in the black box warning for all ADHD drugs.
We need to keep the pressure up on our government health agencies. They must issue warnings and alert the public on the many life-threatening risks of psychopharmaceutical drugs, particularly given they are prescribed to children.
And they must not wait decades to do it.
